The MV IRISH PINE was a very popular ship when she sailed in the Irish Shipping Ltd colours.  Completed by Upper Clyde Ship Builders Ltd, Govan (Yard Number 126) in 1973.
She was sold for $3.9m in 1983.  In the two black and white photos she is seen as the MV CHRISTINAKI  arriving in Liverpool to load what turned out to be her last cargo.  A few weeks later on the 1st February 1993, she foundered at sea in extremely bad weather south-west of Ireland.  Onboard were five Greek officers and twenty two Filipino, none of whom survived.
The cause of the accident was believed to be the forward hatch being blown off. in the appalling weather.  A search, carried out by French and British aircraft, was called off on the 7th February 1993.

CREW MEMBER WITH BROKEN LEG BEING TAKEN ASHORE IN QUEBECK  CANADA 1963 My father was looking at your web site with ref to the Irish Pine in 1963 and saw your question about the crew member with a broken leg. It actually is my father Mr Tom O' Leary from Cork City, Ireland, his leg was broken and also badly severed but is now held together with nuts and bolt.

Next one a comment from the Irish press from January 1962

Both pieces would have been dated between 29/8/'61 and 17/01/'62 as from my Discharge Book,   Skipper was McCarthy and C. Eng was Dobson. My background was Class of '55 Crawford Inst. Cork.

Here is the Irish Pine 1983>>>
but I can not remember where it is. Of note regarding the Pine, during the year prior to the real demise of ISL the Pine was sold, the rumour at the time was that she was sold just to keep the company afloat for a few more months. The proceeds of the sale were never adequately documented by the liquidator although the sale took place before he was appointed. How much of the sale proceeds went against company debt and how much went against corporate wages and packages was never determined. Capt. Paul Reid
