Irish Shipping Ltd. Crew and Ships Irish Hazel
I am the Apprentice in uniform with a strap over my right shoulder
holding binoculars, they were an old wartime pair with plain aluminium
body which I recognised immediately as I carried them for years.
That photo has to be 50 years old and it may be in the "Irish
Hazel", wish we could read that lifebelt on the rail. We must
have been at morning "smoko", and with a Pilot on board, as I
see the standbyman coming down the starboard side with the bridge tray
Sitting on the hatch in the white cap is I believe Davy Hodge. On
my first trip to sea in "Irish Elm", Capt. E.C.G. Horne of
Cobh in command, Davy was on the wheel when the giant wave hit us in the
North Atlantic, his steady hand saved us from broaching and pretty much
saved all hands. We had a full load of grain and ended up going to
Belfast for repairs. Back then we were not allowed to fly the
tricolor and there was a political fuss at the time. Lots of
memories of shipboard life back then. ~~~~~ Sitting with white cap is Boscoe Edwards (Dublin ?) then Bill Heffernan Passage East then Bill Gunnip Cheekpoint and Chippy Cahill (Dublin ?) lamptrimmer
